A new tradition

This year our neighborhood started something new. We all got together and donated food for the food bank. My neighbor, Sylvia had this BRILLIANT idea to forgo the neighbor gifts this year and put that money to good use. So she held an open house at her home tonight from 6-9. You just stopped by to drop off your food...as little or as much as you would like to donate, enjoy a little treat and visit with your friends (my favorite part).
I have to admit, I do not enjoy trying to think up something to give to my fellow neighbors. And then I struggle trying to come up with a cute little saying to go along with it. I KNOW you know what I'm talking about.
So thank you to my cute little friend Sylvia for thinking this up and helping me do a good deed along the way. Heaven knows that I get so caught up in the gift buying and the commercialization of Christmas. Don't we all? Also, hats off to Jiffy Lube (alright!) who is going to match all of our donations!!
My December is off to a great start!!

I love this idea as well. This is what we have been doing in my family instead of giving gifts to all my siblings and neices and nephews. It really makes giving a whole lot more fun and less stressful.

It was fun seeing you guys the other night. Too bad about the lights, we ended up going home as well :)

I love that idea. I too get stressed trying to come up with neighbor ideas. What a great tradition. Good job for hosting the giving!

How fun! That is my favorite part about the holidays is giving service to others. Ty and I started a tradtion a few years ago, and we select someone in our ward or a neighbor or a client from his work that is in need. Last year we did a money tree for a family in our ward that lost their job and didn't have much. Our friends joined in and it was a blast. I didn't know until this last sunday when the husband spoke in church how much that affected their family. It makes you feel good knowing you are helping someone somehow!

Good for you guys. What a great idea. I should do that with all of my neighbors. We make treats for about 12 of our friends in this area and let me tell you, that can get pretty pricey but I would feel better about it if I knew the $ was going to a good cause. Maybe next year.
I'm going to try and come in next week sometime so I'll try and come NOT on a Fri when you're gone. And yes, we need to get together soon :) Ice Skating maybe or the lights at Hogle Zoo, Festival of trees? What do you think?

That really is such a good idea!! I HATE trying to think of good gifts! I think it might be to late to try for this year but I am going to do that next year! Thanks for sharing!

Good on ya sista! Don't you just love that Jiffy Lube matches?! I hate neighbor gifts! Our bishop gives a talk the last Sunday of November each year about that he doesn't want us doing neighbor gifts and to donate instead to a worthy cause...gotta love that! Takes a lot of stress out of Christmas! Have a happy day. Love the new blog template.
