I will admit it, I am a sucker for Valentine's Day. I am also a sucker for sugar cookies. I cannot count the many times that I have tried to make "the perfect sugar cookie". I have tried to make the really soft, fluffy kind like my sister, Steph. I have tried to make the perfectly pretty ones like my mother in law, Sue. No matter who's recipe I follow, they always turn out REALLY bad! Like so bad that both Ben and I have to practically gag it down. But because I love the adorable heart shaped sugar cookies with cute pink frosting on them, I decided to try once again. I think I saw fear in Ben's eyes as I dragged out the mixer, flour and sugar. He knew what was about to happen and he was frightened. With every reason to be! But I assured him this was a new recipe and I was going to learn how to make a darn sugar cookie! I got to work. The dough mixed up well. No tiny flour pellets that I have gotten in the past. So far so good. I rolled out my dough and used my heart shaped cookie cutter. Wow, this was like the first time that I tried to roll out cookie dough and it did not stick to my hands not to mention the kitchen counter. I was very proud when I took my cookies out and they were all puffy and cute. Perfect little hearts. But how would they taste? Sure enough...delicious (If I may say so myself). I am so proud! Can you tell? I am writing an entire blog about my sugar cookie experience (my shirt is covered with flour...literally). But if you too suffer from sugar cookie retardation. Try this recipe for Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Sift together in large bowl:
3 1/4 cups flour
1 t. soda
1/2 t. salt
Combine:
1/2 cup soft butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 t. vanilla or nutmeg (I used nutmeg)
Beat at medium speed for 2 minutes.
Add:
1/2 cup thick sour cream
sifted flour mixture
Beat at low speed until well blended (1 1/2 minutes). Roll out on lightly floured board to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with your favorite cookie cutter. Put on prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 12 minutes. Cool and frost.
